Activities, procedures and doses in pediatric patients due to radiopharmaceuticals BABT
Oliveira,Silvia Maria Velasques de; Boasquevisque,Edson Mendes; Santos,Felipe Sima dos; Biancardi,Rodrigo.
An investigation performed between 2003 and 2005 in sixteen selected public and private institutions in Northeast, Southeast and South geographical regions of Brazil evaluated average organ doses and effective doses in 2,411 pediatric patients due to diagnostic procedures with radiopharmaceuticals. For 1 year, effective doses were greater than literature. For 5 years, differences were noticed between present work and literature for bone scintigraphy, thyroid scintigraphy and 67Ga citrate scintigraphy. These differences may be attributed to the uncertainties in internal dose calculations. High absorved doses in bone surfaces of children due to 67Ga citrate and bone scintigraphy should be evaluated accordingly. Current protocols used recommend standardized...

Adenoma of the gallbladder in a mongoose (Mungos mungo) Ciência Rural
Cardoso,Saulo Pereira; Mattioli,Mariana Portugal; Borges,Betânia Pereira; Blume,Guilherme Reis; Reis Júnior,Janildo Ludolf; Sant'Ana,Fabiano José Ferreira de.
ABSTRACT: Primary gallbladder neoplasms occur infrequently in domestic animals and rarely in wild animals. This article describes a case of gallbladder adenoma in a mongoose ( Mungos mungo) in captivity. Grossly, the gallbladder was moderately distended with a smooth capsular surface. Necropsy showed an irregular, soft, whitish nodule 0.8cm in diameter. Microscopic examination of the nodule showed proliferation of epithelial cells, which projected from the mucosa and formed papillary projections supported by a sparse fibrovascular stroma. Neoplastic cells were well differentiated with mild anisocytosis and anisokaryosis. Based on these histopathological findings, adenoma of the gallbladder was diagnosed.

Cunha,R.M.C.; Lavalle,G.E.; Reis,D.C.; Horta,R.S.; Teixeira,S.V.; Ramirez,J.A.; Araújo,R.B..
ABSTRACT Electrochemotherapy is a local anticancer treatment in which non-permeant chemotherapeutic drugs are associated with electric pulses of well-established parameters. The electric pulses cause pores to open on the plasma membrane and facilitate drug transport, enhancing cytotoxicity and reducing side effects. Assessment of electrochemotherapy effects on Ehrlich solid tumor development in this work aims to evaluate in vivo usage of the electroporator device developed by the Department of Electrical Engineering of Engineering School of UFMG. Therefore, 40 Swiss mice were inoculated with Ehrlich tumor cells, and developed the tumor in solid form. After 21 days, mice were subjected to specific treatment protocols (control, bleomycin, electric pulses and...

Ciclooxygenase inhibitor and metronomic chemotherapy association for the treatment of metastatic anal sac carcinoma in dog: case report Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Teixeira,N.C.T.; Bicalho,A.P.C.V.; Vasconcelos,A.V.; Horta,R.S.; Cunha,R.M.C.; Lavalle,G.E..
ABSTRACT Metronomic chemotherapy consists of an anticancer modality treatment. It is applicable in patients at an advanced stage, with the objective of increasing overall survival. The aim of this study was to report an anal sac apocrine carcinoma case in a dog with lymph node metastasis treated with metronomic chemotherapy sequential to surgery and conventional chemotherapy using gemcitabine and carboplatin. Metronomic chemotherapy was associated with cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitors, due to strong tumor COX-2 immunohistochemistry expression. Metronomic chemotherapy was initiated with cyclophosphamide, but it was replaced by lomustine, also in metronomic dosage, due to adverse effects. Treatment showed effectiveness, since the patient's overall...

Several types of tumors affect dogs' skin. Simultaneously occurring neoplasms with different histological patterns might be rarely present in the same animal. This paper describes the occurrence of epitheliotropic cutaneous T-cell lymphoma and melanoma in a dog. The animal had nodular lesions in the abdominal region and serpiginous plaques on the dorsal region of the trunk. Cytology evidenced malignant fusiform cells from the abdominal lesions as well as few round cells from the dorsal. The histopathological examination of the abdominal lesions showed dermis with polygonal to spindle-shaped neoplastic cells. The lesion of the dorsal region evidenced neoplastic round cells with generally distinct cell borders and a moderate amount of eosinophilic cytoplasm....

Laryngeal Rhabdomyosarcoma in a dog: case report Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Dias,F.G.G.; Cintra,P.P.; Calazans,S.G.; Jorge,A.T.; Pereira,L.F.; Dias,L.G.G.G.; Olivio,M.B.; Magalhães,G.M..
ABSTRACT The larynx is part of the upper respiratory tract and is responsible for phonation. It allows air to pass between the pharynx and the trachea, but prevents food from entering the airways. Laryngeal neoplasms, including rhabdomyosarcomas, are uncommon in dogs. However, these tumors can trigger numerous progressive clinical signs related to respiratory difficulty and altered phonation. The diagnosis of laryngeal cancer should be made based on the history and symptoms of the patient, combined with complementary tests. The treatment of choice is surgical excision, combined or not with chemotherapy. In view of the low incidence of laryngeal cancer, the objective of the present work was to describe a case of laryngeal rhabdomyosarcoma detected during...

MicroRNA and cancer: a focus on mammary tumors in female dogs Ciência Rural
Salvador-Bernabé,Rosana Lino; Tinucci-Costa,Mirela; Amorim,Renee Laufer.
ABSTRACT: Mammary tumors are the most frequent tumors reported in female dogs and have great relevance in veterinary oncology; however, little is known about the molecular mechanisms involved in the development of metastasis. An increasing number of human studies have suggested that epigenetic alterations, such as DNA methylation, miRNA, and histone modifications, are the predominant events leading to the metastatic phenotype in tumor cells and participate in regulating oncogenic signals associated with tumor spread. Among these epigenetic alterations, miRNAs have stood out in recent years, presenting a fundamental role in tumorigenesis. There are still few studies evaluating the role of miRNAs in canine mammary tissues. Thus, this paper aims to review...

Myelopathy associated with cervical epidural spinal metastasis of follicular-compact thyroid carcinoma in two dogs Ciência Rural
Tochetto,Camila; Rosa,Fábio Brum; Santos,Rosmarini Passos dos; Mazzanti,Alexandre; Fighera,Rafael Almeida; Kommers,Glaucia Denise.
This case report describes the clinical, histopathological and immunohistochemical findings in two dogs with myelopathy associated with metastasis of follicular-compact thyroid carcinoma. Microscopically, both primary neoplasms were characterized by polygonal cells arranged in follicles (occasionally filled with eosinophilic colloid-like material) or in sheets. The neoplastic cells had a moderately eosinophilic cytoplasm and there was moderate anisokaryosis and anisocytosis. Additionally, the neoplastic cells were positive for thyroglobulin on immunohistochemistry, confirming the follicular origin of both tumors. This is a very uncommon presentation of this pathological condition.

Ferreira,M.G.P.A.; Antunes,A.V.; Pascoli,A.L.; Nazaret,T.L.; Gering,A.P.; Reis Filho,N.P.; Costa,M.T.; Nardi,A.B..
ABSTRACT Neuropathic pain occurs when there is a lesion or a dysfunction of the nervous system. Humans and veterinary patients may develop neuropathic pain, but in veterinary it is not often reported probably because of its mistaken diagnosis. A canine patient was admitted to the Veterinary Hospital of UNESP-Jaboticabal-SP, Brazil with a nodule on the left thoracic limb. The nodule was surgically removed, and histopathological analysis demonstrated the tumor was a soft tissue sarcoma (STS) and the margins were not clean. Based on the patient’s health condition and the lack of suitable equipment, the next procedure was limb amputation. The patient received analgesic medication in the post-surgery period; nevertheless, clinical signs of neuropathic pain were...

Reactivity of p53 protein in canine transmissible venereal tumor Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Moro,J.V.; Tinucci-Costa,M.; Silveira,A.C.T.; Gerardi,D.G.; Alessi,A.C..
The expression of p53 protein was evaluated in canine transmissible venereal tumor (CTVT), as following: natural occurrence (n=8); resistant to chemotherapy (n=4); and allogeneic transplanted in progression (n=8), stable (n=8), and regression (n=8)stages. The collected specimens were submitted to GM1 immunohistochemical reaction. Results showed a mean percentage of immunomarked cells around 18.6% in CTVT of natural occurrence, 23.8% in CTVT resistant to chemotherapy, 22.9% in allogeneic transplanted CTVT in both progression and stable stages, and 35.8% in transplanted CTVT in regression stage. The results suggest that there is a functional abnormality in p53 gene and its products in the studied tumors; although, it is not possible to correlate the...

Soft tissue sarcomas in dogs: does surgical resection heal? MV&Z
Castro, Patrícia Ferreira de; Campos, Andressa Gianotti; Matera, Julia Maria.
Soft tissue sarcomas (STS), a heterogeneous group of different tumors of mesenchymal origin, are described as pseudo-encapsulated masses with poor defined margins that present high rates of local recurrence compared to the low to moderate metastatic potential. They can occur both in humans and animals, and in dogs they comprise approximately 15% of all skin and subcutaneous tumors. Due to its invasive behavior, surgery is the main treatment applied for these tumors in dogs, and it can be combined to radiotherapy after the incomplete resection because the role of chemotherapy is still very poorly understood in this subject.

Tubulopapillary rectal adenocarcinoma in dog: clinical, surgical, pathological and immunophenotypical aspects: case report Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Oliveira,A.R.; Flecher,M.C.; Horta,R.S.; Souza,M.C.C.; Hardt,I.; Gonçalves,A.B.B.; Cassali,G.D.; Souza,T.D..
ABSTRACT Intestinal carcinomas are rare in dogs. The prognosis and survival time are dependent of the histological type, the invasion of the intestinal wall by the malignant cells and the ability of primary neoplasm to produce metastasis. This study reports a case of a Yorkshire dog that developed a rectal tubulopapillary adenocarcinoma progressing to a peritoneal carcinomatosis and multiple metastasis in large intestines, bladder, kidney, iliac lymph node, liver and lungs, six months after transanal surgical resection of the primary rectal neoplasm. Clinical, surgical, pathological and immunophenotypic findings are described. COX-2 imunohistochemical score was higher in hepatic metastasis (score 9) than in the primary tumour (score 6), and the growth...
